We found out that the City of Marathon received its name from the railroad workers. Yes, they thought the job of building the Overseas Railroad would go on forever. The railroad camp here grew and prospered because of the railroad.

History of Marathon Florida Keys
The original Hotel Marathon (a fancy hotel for its day) first opened around 1910, close to what is now 33rd Street.
